Goat - Manitoba Goat Association

The Manitoba goat industry is in its infancy.  According to 2006 census data there are over 13,000 goats in Manitoba.  There are about 470 farms reporting goats, with an average of 28 goats on each farm.  This an increase of 12% compared to 2001.  The latest Statistics Canada information suggests goat farming is coming out of the hobby phase.

Demand for goat meat is increasing mainly due to immigration.  Muslim and Filipino communities are the major consumers of goat meat in Manitoba.  However, more consumers are noticing goat meat because of its healthy nutrient content.  Most of the demand for goat meat is currently filled by imports.  Manitoba farmers also ship a huge share of their production to other provinces, particularly in the East.

Manitoba Goat Association is the only organization representing goat farmers that conducts some educational and developmental activities.  MGA is funded primarily through a voluntary annual membership fee of $35 per farmer.
